Trip Report- Birds of the high andes in the volcanic mountain range circuit

By Víctor Martínez- Birdwatcher

This product is one of the most wonderful experiences that a birdwatcher may have in different habitats (lakes, desert and Andean wetland, etc) all in a high Andes landscape framework and volcanoes.

We go by road to Yura taking the detour to Juliaca. Landscape is warm and we keep on going up slowly as there are many altitudinal floors that will allow us to get used to high areas. We will first arrive to Pampa de Arrieros, then to Pampa de Cañahuas and finally we will abruptly go down to Pampas de Imata. When arriving to this part, we will be at 4640 masl fully used to high. It is important to arrive to Arequipa one night before to rest comfortably, drink a lot of water and light food.

To this high, we will find beautiful watching places and after Imata we will take detour to the shore of Lagunillas Lake for a long time. Here, our water bodies are extremely productive, the lake, wetland and water mirrors. We can fin flamingo, Plovers, Ducks, etc. At night, we will camp in the Ululunasa lake close to Santa Lucia Town (4025 masl). This town is located at one hour from Juliaca in the Department of Puno.

Next day, we will go very early to the Imata town to take detour to the Chalhuanca Town crossing by the Pillones Dam and the new town of Pillones.

This is an important area as it is habitat of many high Andean species. Here we may watch even three species of Flamingos. We will take the road to Chivay and will turn right to go back to Arequipa and then board the flight back to Lima. In Lima, we will go to Junin lake very early in the morning and will take main road to Abra Anticona (known as Ticlio), the highest asphalted place of the world (4818 masl). After Abra Anticona, we start going down to crossing at the right side to Huancayo in the Manatary valley and left to the Junin Lake. We will take the second route.

The Junin Lake is a mirror of high Andean water that hosts the Junin Grebe, this specie has lost its capacity to fly and is considered by the IUCN as critically threatened. Junin Grebe is one of the most representative endemic species of Peru. The Junin Lake is a resting place of many species of birds and has a delicate ecosystem that is very close where mining activities are developed and is under constant danger to be polluted. We will sleep over the Ondores town.

Next day, we will go early to the Ondores town to the Junin Lake to watch the Junin Grebe. We will see in the water mirror a silhouette and if we guide our binoculars we will be surprised for the beauty of said bird.

In the afternoon, we will come back to Lima with the satisfaction of having made the most beautiful birdwatching circuits in Peru: the Birds of the High Andes in the volcanic mountain range circuit.
